Telehealth

PLEASE CALL OUR OFFICE FIRST TO MAKE AN APPOINTMENT WITH A PROVIDER.

You will access your telehealth appointment through MyChart in EPIC. When you schedule your appointment, our staff will instruct you on how to log on for your appointment. If you do not have a MyChart account, you will be given a temporary link to access your appointment. Please also fill out the Telehealth form on the bottom of this page.

Telehealth appointments are for our established patients only. Please call our office 10 minutes before your scheduled appointment to get checked in.

  1. Our platform is accessed through MyChart which is HIPAA compliant. When you schedule your appointment, our staff will instruct you on how to log on for your appointment. If you do not have a MyChart account, you will be given instructions on how to sign up for MyChart. If you prefer not to utilize MyChart, we will provide a temporary link to access your appointment.  If you want to conduct your appointment on your computer, you will need a microphone and video camera. Your cell phone will also work.
  2. Please call our office 10 minutes before your scheduled appointment.
  3. Have your child with you for the telehealth visit. We cannot at this time engage in telehealth without the patient present.
  4. Your provider will join you there when they are ready.
  5. If the call drops in the middle of the visit, just wait. Your provider will either reconnect with you or phone you.
  6. You will be billed for the an office visit the same as if you were in the office. Our staff will review any copay and billing questions with you prior to your visit.
  7. There is a possibility that your provider will find, during your visit, that you need to come in for an in-person visit or seek a higher level of care for further evaluation. If you are directed to come into the office (at Southern Oregon Pediatrics) you would be charged for only one visit.
  8. Please be sure your device is charged or plugged in so you don't lose connection during the visit. Please close unnecessary programs to maximize the quality of the connection.
  9. For the visit please be in a quiet room with just one child. Please check your child's weight and temperature, if applicable, before the visit starts.

You have chosen to receive care through the use of telemedicine which enables us to provide safe, effective, and convenient care through the use of video technology. As a new technology to deliver healthcare and educational services, it may not be equivalent to the direct patient to physician contact. Risks associated with use of telemedicine include equipment failure, poor image resolution, and the need to seek additional care in person if deemed necessary.

What Is Telehealth?

Telehealth, or a “virtual visit,” is a consultation with one of our physicians via video conferencing. This option is convenient, allows your child to be seen without coming into our office, and provides care by your regular pediatrician (who knows your child’s full history, and has access to their medical chart).

Virtual visits are not for all conditions. We can provide telehealth care for most of the following acute care concerns:

  • Rash
  • Pinkeye without fever in children over two years old
  • Colds
  • Some fevers
  • Allergies
  • Mild croup
  • Constipation, diarrhea or vomiting
  • Minor traumas (lacerations, abrasions, bites)

Different Types of Telehealth Appointments

We also provide telehealth appointments for behavioral and mental health concerns – for both initial evaluations and follow up care as appropriate.

As we cannot listen to your child’s lungs or see their ears, we cannot evaluate ear pain, significant coughs, or assess concerns that require laboratory evaluation such as urinary tract infections and strep or flu testing.

It is also possible that after video conferencing, we may ask you to bring your child in for an in person sick visit if we need to perform a physical exam that reaches beyond the abilities of video conferencing.

Appointments for telehealth visits can be made through our front desk or the portal. As of April 2021, many insurers no longer cover telehealth appointments. Please contact your insurer to confirm coverage prior to booking an appointment.

Before Your Appointment

  • Have child practice opening their mouth wide for the camera with your flashlight
  • If cough or difficulty breathing, check your child’s respiratory rate (count the breaths per minute) and heart rate (see FAQs below)
  • Take several close-up photos of the rash to send (if requested).
  • Write down all of the medicines your child has been taking, and when they last took a dose of ibuprofen or acetaminophen
  • Have current medications or inhalers/spacers available for viewing during the visit
  • Write down any questions you have, as you might forget them during the telemedicine visit
